28 Dec How Can I Avoid Being an Outcast at University?
Social awkwardness stems from the perception that a student is not socialised. The causes of these feelings are frequently personal fears and concerns about societal expectations. Social awkwardness frequently prevents a student from communicating because he or she is afraid of being ridiculed and becoming an outcast among peers. When you realise that everyone is afraid of awkward situations and that it is possible to avoid them, you will begin to strive for communication and stop avoiding people.
- Recognize That You Are Not Alone
Many students are terrified of social awkwardness. It means they are concerned with what others think of them and strive to make a good impression. So the idea is to realise that you are not alone in your fear of social interaction.
- Determine the Root Cause of Awkwardness
Awkwardness can be caused by anxiety, a lack of self-confidence, or fear. However, every problem has a solution, and yours is no exception. It should be your call to action only after you understand why you feel awkward. As experience has shown, the sooner you discover the cause, the more at ease you will be with dealing with the problem.
There are numerous reasons for self-doubt, but the following are the most common: Failure in the past, the feeling that no one understands you, the need to deal with people in specific situations, parental pressure, and confusion as a result of not understanding the motives of others in specific situations
- Get Rid of Shyness
Shyness is not a good quality to have, especially if you want to make friends at university. Shiny people are uninteresting because they don’t say much. Try to forget about your problems and strike up a conversation with someone who seems interesting. In college, for example, there are numerous social groups. Start with the one that makes you feel the most at ease. Of course, this could be a bad attempt, but never give up and try again. Communication must always be approached with a relaxed attitude.
Because you are afraid of doing something wrong, you will never go to a party or attend an interesting event if you are shy. Everyone makes mistakes, which is understandable. You have no reason to be locked up.
- Ignore Other People’s Opinions
It is not a simple task. It is, however, one of the steps that can help you overcome social awkwardness. For many students, peer opinion is more important than what others think. If you are always preoccupied with your own point of view, you will never enjoy communication and will be unable to make friends. Try to break the habit of overthinking everything you say, do, or wear. When you’re not alone or with friends, try to be yourself and enjoy every moment. You will eventually meet people whose opinions will be important to you. However, for the time being, someone may like you while others do not. It’s called life. Every person is unique. So, try to remember that your true friends will always be there for you, even if you make a mistake once or twice.
- Check for the Presence of Social Phobia
Social phobia is a well-known psychological disorder. You can’t live a normal, healthy life if you have it. For example, you may experience anxiety when attending classes or participating in an event.
A person suffering from social phobia will only maintain relationships with family members and close friends, and will avoid all other interpersonal relationships. This phenomenon is based on a fear that others will scrutinise you and make you feel embarrassed.
- Recognize Your Emotions
Determine the times when you feel awkward. Understanding physiological reactions at these points allows you to recognise that you are overwhelmed with adrenaline, causing you to flee and hide.
Pay attention to your physical well-being, such as fever, sweating, excess energy, tension, or oversensitivity to sensations. Analyze your thoughts and consider whether you are attempting to criticise your own behaviour in society. You must also explore your emotions and learn to recognise all of these sensations. It will help you avoid feeling helpless in the future.
What Should You Do If You Are an Outcast at University?
If you don’t have friends among your peers, you should be more social because others may regard you as an outcast. The following tips will help you overcome shyness and feel more at ease in social situations:
- Learn to Unwind
The first step is to learn how to unwind. People around you can sense your anxiety, which you no longer require. Start working on your behaviour at home because you may feel more at ease in the company of close friends. Practice with your parents, open up, and let go of the desire to protect your space. For example, you could tell your mother a personal story and ask her to share her own experience in a similar situation. This will help you avoid feeling stressed in the workplace, and you will be less afraid of social situations.
- Improve Your Sense of Humor
Every person’s life is full of unpleasant things, but you must learn how to avoid paying too much attention to them. Always try to see the bright side of everything that happens to you. It is preferable if you improve your sense of humour. It will be difficult at first because you will be trying to overcome tension and continue thinking about what others think. People will laugh along with you if you try them!
- 3. Be optimistic
You believe that everything you do is wrong when you feel like an outcast. When this happens, it’s best to focus on the positive. What’s the good news now? When you tune in positively, you will realise that all failures are insignificant.
- Improve Your Self-Confidence
People can sense your energy and recognise when you are not confident in yourself. Make an effort to change this. Even if you are self-conscious, act confidently and demonstrate your self-assurance. This should become a distinguishing feature of your personality.
- Make Friends With Others
When at least one person wants to talk to you, you will no longer feel like an outcast. Allow your peers to do this; talk to them, answer their questions, tell stories, discuss movies, whatever you want. Of course, having a good attitude toward others will not protect you from people’s rudeness, but this should not be the reason you want to hide or blame yourself. If you don’t have time to communicate because you have a lot of homework to do, you can use the request help me with homework. Professionals will do your homework, giving you more time to spend with your peers.
Many students overcome social awkwardness and are not social outcasts. Awkwardness is common during adolescence and early youth. People gradually overcome all of these feelings that seemed insurmountable at first.
