26 Apr How To Build A Progressive Web App With React
Progressive Web Apps (PWA) are web applications that provide a native app-like experience to users while still being accessible through a browser. PWAs are becoming more popular because they are easy to build, use fewer resources than native apps, and can work on all platforms.
React is a popular JavaScript library for building web applications. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to build a progressive web app with React.
Prerequisites
Before we get started, make sure you have the following installed:
Node.js
NPM (Node Package Manager)
Getting Started
To get started, let’s create a new React project using Create React App.
Open a terminal window and navigate to the directory where you want to create your new React app.
Run the following command to create a new React app:
npx create-react-app my-app
Once the command completes, navigate into the new my-app
directory.
cd my-app
Run the following command to start the development server:
npm start
This will start a development server at http://localhost:3000
and open the app in your default browser.
Turning the React App into a PWA
Now that we have a basic React app set up, let’s turn it into a PWA.
Install the react-scripts
package if it isn’t already installed:
npm install react-scripts --save
Create a new file called serviceWorker.js
in the src
directory:
touch src/serviceWorker.js
Open the index.js
file in your code editor and uncomment the following line at the bottom of the file:
// serviceWorker.unregister();
This will register the service worker when the app is run in production mode.
Replace the uncommented line with the following code:
serviceWorker.register();
This will register the service worker when the app is run in development mode.
Open the src/serviceWorker.js
file and add the following code:
// Service worker code
This is where you will add the code to register the service worker and cache the assets.
Update the public/manifest.json
file with the following code:
{
"short_name": "My App",
"name": "My Progressive Web App",
"icons": [
{
"src": "icon-512.png",
"sizes": "512x512",
"type": "image/png"
},
{
"src": "icon-192.png",
"sizes": "192x192",
"type": "image/png"
}
],
"start_url": "/",
"display": "standalone",
"background_color": "#fff",
"theme_color": "#000"
}
This is the manifest file that describes the app’s metadata.
Add the following code to the public/index.html
file, inside the head
element:
<link rel="manifest" href="%PUBLIC_URL%/manifest.json" />
<meta name="theme-color" content="#000" />
This will link the manifest file and set the theme color.
Add the following code to the public/index.html
file, inside the body
element:
<noscript>You need to enable JavaScript to run this app.</noscript>
This will display a message to users who have JavaScript disabled.
Testing the PWA
After building the PWA, it’s important to test it thoroughly to ensure it meets the desired functionality and performance requirements. Here are some steps to follow when testing a PWA built with React:
Manual testing: Start with manual testing, which involves testing each feature of the PWA manually. This helps to identify issues that might not be caught by automated tests. Test the PWA on different browsers and devices to ensure it works as expected.
Automated testing: Automate the testing process using tools like Jest and Enzyme. Write test cases for each feature of the PWA and run them regularly to ensure the PWA is functioning as expected. Continuous integration (CI) tools like Travis CI or CircleCI can be used to automatically run tests when new code is committed to the repository.
Performance testing: Use tools like Google Lighthouse or WebPageTest to measure the PWA’s performance. These tools measure factors like load time, first contentful paint (FCP), and time to interactive (TTI). Performance testing helps to identify performance bottlenecks and areas that need improvement.
Usability testing: Conduct usability testing to ensure that the PWA is easy to use and intuitive. Ask users to perform tasks on the PWA and observe their behavior. Identify any usability issues and make improvements accordingly.
Security testing: Security testing is crucial to ensure that the PWA is secure and user data is protected. Conduct penetration testing to identify vulnerabilities and ensure that sensitive data is encrypted and stored securely.
Compatibility testing: Test the PWA on different browsers, operating systems, and devices to ensure it works as expected. Ensure that the PWA is compatible with older devices and browsers.
Accessibility testing: Ensure that the PWA is accessible to users with disabilities. Test the PWA using tools like the Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (WAVE) and ensure that it meets accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
By following these testing practices, you can ensure that your PWA is reliable, performant, and user-friendly. Testing is an ongoing process, and it’s important to regularly test and optimize the PWA to ensure it meets user needs and performs as expected.
