At Programming Homework Tutors, we believe in providing our students with practical, real-world examples of how to apply the concepts they learn in class. That’s why we’ve developed a variety of sample projects to help you see how our courses can be used to create impactful solutions in your field of study.
DETAILS OF ASSESSMENT
For this assessment your task is to build a fully functioning Android based application. This
should be developed using Android Studio and be written in the Kotlin programming
language. Only libraries provided directly within the Android SDK or support libraries
should be used, i.e. the submitted product should be based on your own code and not that
of a 3rd party framework.
The application should appear as professional as possible, and include its own custom
icon. A good colour scheme, use of images, menus, buttons, pop-ups, etc. should all be
included where appropriate. The full specification for the application is given below.
There are two main deliverables for the assessment –
1. A completed Android App. in the form of a zipped Android Studio project including
all developed materials including source code and resources.
2. A recorded presentation that demonstrates the application running, and discusses
key aspects of the code (approx. 10 minutes).
note: It is strongly recommended that you complete Component 1 of the assessment (lab
exercises and logbook creation) prior to attempting this part of the assessment.
Application Specification
The solution to be designed and implemented is a “Travel Companion App”. The key
features of this application are provided here. However, the detailed design of the user
interface is not specified, and designing exactly how the user will interact with the App is
part of the task. The application layout should be responsive and automatically change
layout when the orientation of the device is changed.
The Travel Companion App should allow a user to add, edit and delete “Places of Interest”.
These should be displayed together on a suitable List View. When the application is first
started, this should be the default view shown to the user. Within the list, each item should
display a “Place Name”, “Date Added”, and a small “Description”. The user should be able
to select a Place of Interest, in order to edit more details (shown in a new view or activity).
Each “Place of Interest” should maintain the following details –
Place Name and a supporting Description
Date Added
Rating (e.g. 1-5 stars).
A category – possibly from a drop down list (monument, food, shopping, beach, etc.)
Additional notes (more in-depth than basic description)
GPS location (automatically captured if possible)
Attached photographs.
A user should be able to either ‘save’ of ‘discard’ changes made to the Place of Interest
details, just prior to returning to the main List View activity.
The user should be able to take and associate photographs with a place of interest
(probably via an “Add Photo” button within the Place of Interest edit view). Ideally, the
user should be able to view the added photographs from within the application itself and
also be able to delete previously added photographs.
When a place of interest is first added the user should be able to attempt to automatically
capture the location information (longitude and latitude) using the device’s GPS. If this
information cannot be captured automatically, then the user should have the option to input
the location information manually. When exact coordinates are available, an option should
exist which allows the user to show the location on a map (e.g. via a Google maps view).
When the user exits the application the input data should be persisted in some way, i.e.
stored to the device for automatic reloading the next time the App is used. The choice of
how this is done is upto the developer, it may be a flat-file storage or a local database type
solution.
If the application is interrupted in some way (e.g. due to an incoming phone call) then the
application should have the ability to continue in operation once the interrupting activity
has ceased (e.g. User has ended the call).
An option should be provided which allows the details of a specific place of interest to be
emailed to a friend. The information sent within the email should be automatically
constructed from the stored details. The actual sending of the email should be done via the
default application which supports email functionality on the device.
